Distress Centre Calgary's Mission Statement:

To improve the quality of life in our community by providing crisis support, information and referral services without discrimination.

Agency Description:

Distress Centre Calgary is a non-profit community agency providing 24-hour crisis support, professional counselling and 2-1-1 referrals to community resources in Calgary and the surrounding area - all at no cost. We don’t judge; we’re here to listen, support and connect with those in crisis. A call to Distress Centre is often a first step towards achieving stability in a stressful or anxious time of life.

Everyone has a right to help when they need it. To ensure support is accessible and available, we offer services 24 hours a day, free of charge. Our programs act as a gateway to professional help, peer support or a network of social agencies.

Impact:

Distress Centre Calgary is there for people in the moment, but we are also focused on creating lasting impact and change for our community. Volunteerism and partnership are central to our work. 24/7, our group of over 200 highly trained volunteers are responding to calls, emails and online chats from people in need of a caring ear. Our volunteers consistently report that the skills they learned at Distress Centre have improved their lives, and the lives of others.

As a 24 hr service responding to issues when they happen, we help to reduce the likelihood of situations escalating and becoming unsafe; such as risk for suicide and domestic violence. We are partners in a network of care on our community and help ease people’s access to the longer term services that can support them in achieving lasting change.

Values:

Leadership through volunteerism, innovation and partnership.

If you are in crisis, and need immediate help call 403-266-HELP (4357).
