For close to 30 years, Stella Burry Community Services (SBCS) has provided counselling and support to both youth and adults with social and emotional problems, assisting them to develop skills that will enable them to have greater autonomy and responsibility for their lives. With operations situated in St. John’s, SBCS serves the entire province with programs that do not exist elsewhere in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The organization is an acknowledged leader in the development of programs and supportive housing for those who have experienced a variety of problems in their lives such as physical, sexual and emotional abuse, psychiatric difficulties, conflict with the law, alcohol and substance abuse, family violence or breakdown, and the lack of opportunity for education or employment preparation.
The SBCS mandate revolves around three core objectives:

- to provide support and counseling to individuals who have experienced significant personal problems that contribute to poverty and marginalization;
- to develop and provide safe, clean, affordable housing for low income singles and families; and
- to provide opportunities for training and skills development that would enable each individual to improve his or her economic prospects within the community.
